How the VITRAN bus works

VITRAN is the U.S. Virgin Islands' public bus, run by the Department of Public Works on 14 routes across St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix — 197 timetabled trips on DPW's published schedules. A ride costs $2.00 in exact cash, seniors 60 and over ride free, and the first buses leave before 5 AM. There is no live tracking: the times here are DPW's, checked October 18, 2026.

VITRAN fares and how to ride

Fares effective July 18, 2024, as DPW publishes them:

• Board only at designated bus stops, and let riders off before you get on.
• Pay the exact fare in US cash into the farebox: VITRAN does not give change.
• No valid ID on boarding means the regular $2.00 fare.
• Press the yellow strip to tell the driver your stop is coming up.
• Priority seats are for seniors and riders with disabilities, and that is enforced.

VITRAN Plus is the door-to-door paratransit service for riders who cannot use the fixed-route bus; eligibility needs an application and an interview, booked on (340) 773-1664 ext. 4225 (DPW's VITRAN Plus page). Fares: dpw.vi.gov/fares.

Bus, taxi or ferry?

The bus is the cheapest way across St. Thomas and St. Croix, but it runs on a timetable built for residents: a bus every one to two hours on most routes, and none late in the evening. For a fixed price to a hotel or beach, the official taxi fares are set per person between named stops. To St. John, Route 401 gets you to Red Hook and the ferry does the rest; on St. John, the 108 and 109 cross to Coral Bay. About these times

Every time on this page is copied from the Department of Public Works' timetables at dpw.vi.gov/schedules, one page per route and direction, last checked October 18, 2026. Three things to know:

• Days of service. DPW's pages do not say which days the buses run, except Route 201 (Monday–Wednesday and Thursday–Friday timetables). Call before relying on a weekend or public-holiday bus.
• Scheduled, not live. VITRAN publishes no live bus positions. The buses moving on the map above are where the timetable puts them.
• Stops and roads are our placement. DPW publishes no stop locations. Each stop is set at the place or neighbourhood it is named for (looked up with Google and OpenStreetMap and checked against the route's own times). On St. Thomas and St. Croix the roads follow DPW's own route maps, which also place Calquohoun on Midland Road and La Reine Terminal where Centerline meets Northside Road; between the points those maps fix, and on St. John, whose DPW map is out of date and is not used, the road is the one Google finds, which is not always the street the bus takes. Hidden Valley and the Cruz Bay roundabout could not be located and sit on the road between their neighbouring stops.
• Printed typos. DPW's pages carry 8 times that cannot be right as printed. They are shown in amber with a † exactly as DPW wrote them, and left out of every countdown and ride time rather than guessed at:

• Route 28-103 eastbound, Christiansted: “9:30 PM” on the trip leaving 8:15 AM — out of order with the stops around it.
• Route 101 inbound, UVI: “7:18” on the trip leaving 8:00 PM — no AM or PM.
• Route 102 outbound, Vendor's Plaza: “11:05 AM” on the trip leaving 11:40 AM — out of order with the stops around it.
• Route 102 outbound, Schneider Hospital: “11:18 AM” on the trip leaving 11:40 AM — out of order with the stops around it.
• Route 501 inbound, Thomasville: “2:00 AM” on the trip leaving 2:15 PM — out of order with the stops around it.
• Route 601 inbound, New Tutu: “6:45 AM” on the trip leaving 6:00 AM — out of order with the stops around it.
• Route 601 inbound, Home Depot: “11:00 AM” on the trip leaving 11:05 AM — out of order with the stops around it.
• Route 108 inbound, Salt Pond: “6:00 PM” on the trip leaving 3:25 PM — out of order with the stops around it.

Route 101 outbound is published as an irregular route with no times (call (340) 774-5678 or (340) 201-5212), and DPW's page for Route 201 outbound, Monday–Wednesday, has an empty table. A few rows time one stop only (Route 108's lone 1:00 PM at the Cruz Bay Dock, Route 109's runs back to the garage): they stay in the timetables as printed but are not counted as rides, so no countdown or bus on the map uses them.
