Virgin Islands ferry questions
Do I need a passport for USVI and BVI ferries?
No passport is required for travel within the US Virgin Islands (between St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix). A valid passport is required for all ferries to the British Virgin Islands (Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke, Anegada). As of January 2025, all visitors to the BVI must also complete an online e-card at bviedcard.gov.vg before travel.
What are the BVI entry fees when arriving by ferry?
When arriving in the BVI by ferry you pay: a $10 per person port fee (charged at departure from the USVI), a $20 per person BVI departure tax when leaving the BVI (residents pay $15), and a $10 per person BVI Environmental and Tourism Levy on arrival. These fees are not included in ferry ticket prices.
How early should I arrive for a BVI ferry?
Arrive 60–90 minutes before departure for any BVI-bound ferry to allow time for customs and immigration check-in. Most operators close their ticket counter 15 minutes before departure. For the Inter Island Boat Services day-trip ferries, check-in is required 45 minutes before departure.
