Where to stay in the Virgin Islands

Each island page sets out its neighbourhoods — what you can walk to, how far the beaches and ferries are, the official taxi fare from the airport — then the rentals there.

Magens Bay from the hills above: the long white beach at the head of a sheltered bay on the north shore of St. ThomasU.S. Virgin IslandsSt. Thomas vacation rentals

The island most visitors fly into. Stay on the East End for the St. John ferries and the calmest beaches, in or near Charlotte Amalie for town and the shortest airport ride, or up on the North Side for the views and the quiet.

Trunk Bay, St. John, seen from the North Shore Road overlook — white sand, turquoise water and Trunk CayU.S. Virgin IslandsSt. John vacation rentals

Two-thirds national park and almost all villas: St. John has very few hotel rooms, so most people rent a house. Pick Cruz Bay to walk to the ferry and restaurants, the south-shore estates for a pool and a view a few minutes from town, or Coral Bay for the quiet side.

St. Croix's East End from the air: green hills and reef-ringed headlands at Point Udall, the north shore running west into the distanceU.S. Virgin IslandsSt. Croix vacation rentals

The biggest of the Virgin Islands and the least crowded, forty miles south of St. Thomas. Stay in or east of Christiansted for the boardwalk and Buck Island, on the North Shore for the diving at Cane Bay, or in Frederiksted for the sunsets.

The BVI's main island and the hub for the ferries and the charter fleets. Stay on the North Shore for the beaches, the West End for the ferries to St. Thomas and Jost Van Dyke, or the East End by the airport.

The Baths, Virgin Gorda: granite boulders around a clear tidal pool under a blue skyBritish Virgin IslandsVirgin Gorda vacation rentals

The Baths, North Sound and some of the BVI's best beaches. Stay near Spanish Town for the ferry and The Baths, along the Savannah–Mahoe Bay coast for the beaches, or on North Sound for the boats.

White Bay, Jost Van Dyke, from the hillside: yachts on their moorings over turquoise water and a long strip of white sandBritish Virgin IslandsJost Van Dyke vacation rentals

Four square miles, a few hundred people, Foxy's and the Soggy Dollar. Few places to stay and most of them small: book early for the winter and the holidays.
