DPNR has issued a sargassum advisory for USVI beaches. 2026 is on track to be a record arrival year. Conditions shift rapidly.
Arrive before 9am
Ships dock 7–9am and flood beaches by 10am. Getting there early means the best spots before the rush.
Stay for golden hour
Most ships depart 4–6pm. Beaches clear out fast after 4pm — often the most peaceful and photogenic time of day.
Skip the main excursion beaches on busy days
Magens Bay (STT) and Trunk Bay (STJ) fill first. Hull Bay, Sapphire, and Hawksnest see far less cruise traffic.
St. John tender windows are short
STJ tender calls typically run 8am–2pm. After ships recall their last tender, the beach empties quickly.
BVI can be a quiet alternative
Different ships call different ports. A heavy STT day can still mean calm beaches in Tortola or Virgin Gorda — check the BVI column.
Weekends tend to be quieter
Tuesday through Thursday typically see the most ships region-wide. If your schedule is flexible, Sunday and Monday arrivals often beat the crowds.
