Car rentals on St. Croix

St. Croix is the biggest Virgin Island, with its two towns at opposite ends and the beaches, rainforest and East End between them. For most visitors a car pays for itself. Here is every rental company we could confirm is trading, and how renting here works.

The first question

Do you need a car on St. Croix?

Rent a car

Christiansted and Frederiksted are 17 miles apart, and the North Shore beaches, the rainforest and Point Udall are all a drive from both. The public bus (VITRAN, $2) runs a few routes, too seldom to tour on.

Taxis are fixed-fare, and on St. Croix the posted fare covers one or two people together: the airport to Christiansted is $24, Christiansted to Frederiksted $36. Staying on the Christiansted boardwalk for a short trip, you can walk and take the odd taxi; anything more and a car is cheaper and freer.

Rent or take taxis? Do the sums

The taxi column is the official fixed fare from Christiansted, there and back, for your party; change the rental rate to the quote you have.

Taxis$360
Rental$525

Taxis win by $165 for 2 people over 5 days.

Taxi: the official fare Christiansted ↔ Cane Bay, $36 each way for 2 together, 2 rides a day. On St. Croix one fare covers one or two riders together; from three, each pays. Night (midnight–6 AM), luggage and waiting surcharges are extra; the fare calculator has every pair.

Car rental companies on St. Croix

Four companies have a desk at the airport. Olympic and Judi of Croix meet you at arrivals instead, and Centerline also has offices in Christiansted and mid-island. No St. Croix company publishes a daily rate, so ask for a quote. A Jeep is optional here: the main roads are better and flatter than on St. John.

Before you drive

Driving on St. Croix: the rules of the road

Side of the road
Drive on the LEFT in American left-hand-drive cars. At junctions look left for the stop sign, and go slowly at first. A light tap of the horn usually means hello, thanks, or go ahead.
Speed
55 mph on the Melvin H. Evans Highway (Route 66, the south-shore highway past the airport), 40 on parts of Centerline Road, 35 elsewhere outside town, 20 in Christiansted and Frederiksted unless posted.
Licence
A U.S. licence is all you need: the USVI is U.S. territory. Centerline and Budget accept a foreign licence from your country of residence with no local permit; Twin City says international drivers need a 30-day local permit, so ask your company.
Age
25 is the norm. Budget rents from 22 with a young-driver surcharge, Olympic from 23 at $10 a day with proof of your own full-coverage insurance.
Insurance and deposits
Credit-card rental cover is generally accepted. Debit cards are the catch: Budget makes its damage waiver and prepaid gas mandatory and holds $650–$1,000; Centerline makes its waiver mandatory and holds the total plus $500.
4x4?
Not needed for normal touring: a sedan or small SUV handles Centerline Road, the North Shore road and both towns. A Jeep is worth it for unpaved beach tracks, and Jeeps sell out first. Rental agreements bar off-road driving.
Gas
About ten stations, most on Northside Road west of Christiansted and mid-island around Centerline Road. None is mapped east of Christiansted: fill up before you drive to Point Udall. Cars go out full and come back full.
Staying on the island
There is no car ferry from St. Croix. The ferry and the seaplane to St. Thomas carry passengers only, so a St. Croix rental stays on St. Croix.

Good to know

St. Croix car rental tips

Cruise day at Frederiksted

There is no full rental office at the pier. Budget staffs the pier on ship days (book ahead and choose the cruise pier); Centerline's minivan meets ships at the pier clock tower at 9 AM (11 for late ships) and runs renters to its La Reine office, back by 3:30 PM.

Airport parking

If someone collects you: the first 15 minutes at STX are free, then $2 an hour, $10 for 4 to 24 hours.

Ask for the full price

Government taxes are added to rentals collected at the airport. Centerline's quotes show every tax and fee up front.

Book the Jeep early

Jeeps, 7-seaters and vans go first in winter. Budget's cancellation rule on those is 72 hours.

No scooters

We found no scooter, moke or golf-cart rental trading on St. Croix; Cruzin Scooters in Christiansted has closed.

Night driving

Roads run from new asphalt to potholes to gravel, and many are unlit. Plan the long drives for daylight.

St. Croix car rental FAQ

Do I need a rental car on St. Croix?

For most visitors, yes. The two towns are 17 miles apart and the beaches, rainforest and East End are spread between them; the public bus runs a few routes. Taxis are fixed-fare (the airport to Christiansted is $24 for one or two people). A short stay on the Christiansted boardwalk works without one.

Which car rental companies are at St. Croix airport?

Four have a desk at Henry E. Rohlsen Airport (STX): Avis, Budget, Centerline and Hertz. Olympic Rent-A-Car and Judi of Croix meet renters at arrivals instead of a counter.

Can I rent a car at the Frederiksted cruise pier?

On ship days, Budget staffs the pier (book ahead and choose the cruise pier as pickup), and Centerline's minivan meets ships at the pier clock tower at 9 AM and drives renters to its La Reine office. There is no permanent rental office at the pier.

How old do you have to be to rent a car on St. Croix?

Usually 25. Budget rents from 22 with a surcharge, and Olympic from 23 at $10 a day with proof of your own full-coverage insurance.

Do I need a 4x4 on St. Croix?

No. St. Croix is flatter than St. John and its main roads are better; a sedan or small SUV does the island. A Jeep helps only on unpaved beach tracks, which rental agreements usually exclude anyway.

Can I take a St. Croix rental car to St. Thomas?

No. There is no car ferry from St. Croix; the ferry and seaplane to St. Thomas carry passengers only. Rent again on St. Thomas.
