BoatyBall runs 247 mooring balls in 14 fields across the British Virgin Islands, plus 8 day-use dive moorings. Reservable orange balls cost $55 and go on sale in the app at 7:00 AM for that night. First-come balls in the same fields are $30–40: tie up, then pay in the app. Counts are from the BoatyBall app map, checked September 23, 2026; only the app knows what is free tonight.

Bright orange, pear-shaped, numbered balls with the BoatyBall logo. Every morning at 7:00 AM local time the app releases that night's balls: orange ones are free, grey ones are taken. Tap an orange ball, tap Reserve, and you have four minutes to pay $55. A red flag marks your ball and a confirmation email follows. Check-in and check-out are at noon.
Reserving needs a paid Solo membership; a limited number of boaters each week can upgrade to reserve 24 hours ahead. Cancel from Payments in the app menu, under BoatyBall's terms.
Never tie up to a reservable ball you have not reserved. BoatyBall suspends the account and the boat and reports the captain to the charter company. Check the ball number matches your booking.
White buoys with an orange BoatyBall sticker, drawn blue in the app, $30–40 a night. Any BoatyBall account, free ones included, can pay. Tie up first, then open the app, pick a blue ball in your bay (the number does not matter), agree that you are on a BoatyBall ball and pay. Keep the email: it is your proof.
Not every ball in the BVI is BoatyBall's. Paying the app for someone else's ball can lose you the payment.
Dive-site balls with a reflective yellow stripe, drawn yellow in the app. No overnight. The payment is a donation to the people who maintain them: the Willy T, SharkPlano's and Kodiak Queen wrecks in the BVI, and Congo, Mingo, Grass and Thatch Cays and Sprat Bay in the USVI.
Red balls at the Indians, the Caves, the Rhone, the Baths, the Dogs and Sandy Cay are the Trust's, not BoatyBall's: 90 minutes, covered by the marine-park permit the charter base sells.

Day-use dive moorings (no overnight, donation in the app): Willy T wreck (Key Bay, Peter Island), Kodiak Queen wreck (Long Bay, Virgin Gorda), SharkPlano's wreck (Great Dog), Congo Cay (off St. John), Mingo Cay (off St. John), Grass Cay (off St. Thomas), Thatch Cay (off St. Thomas), Sprat Bay (Water Island).
Every morning at 7:00 AM Atlantic Standard Time (the BVI's clock, the same as Eastern Daylight Time in summer), BoatyBall releases that night's reservable orange balls in the app. You need a Solo membership to reserve, and you get four minutes to pay the $55 once you tap Reserve. Check-in and check-out are at noon. Set an alarm for 6:58 and have the app open and logged in; in busy season (December to April) the reservable balls sell out fast.

Great Harbour, Soper's Hole, Cane Garden Bay, Oil Nut Bay and Anegada are reservable only; Cooper Island, Leverick Bay, Saba Rock (9 and 9), Marina Cay, B-Line, Diamond Cay and Little Harbour have both. You need a paid Solo membership to reserve; a free account can pay for first-come balls.
Cooper Island's Manchioneel Bay field has 36 BoatyBall balls, reservable and first-come, run with Cooper Island Beach Club. There is no anchoring in the field. First-come balls go by about noon in season.
BoatyBall runs 28 reservable balls in Great Harbour in two fields, 8 in the inner field and 20 further out, all orange and all released at 7 AM. There are no BoatyBall first-come balls in Great Harbour; there is room to anchor, clear of the ferry lane. Jost Van Dyke as a whole has 92 BoatyBall balls across Great Harbour, Little Harbour (36), Diamond Cay (18) and B-Line on Little Jost (10).
Three fields: Leverick Bay has 28 balls (reservable and first-come), Saba Rock 18 (9 reservable and 9 first-come) and Oil Nut Bay 11, every one of them reservable. Bitter End and Vixen Point have their own balls outside the app.
Yes. BoatyBall has 12 reservable orange balls off Setting Point, released at 7 AM for that night like every other field. Anegada is a long passage over a reef-strewn approach, so reserving before you leave North Sound means you are not racing for a ball on arrival. Local first-come balls are paid ashore.
A free BoatyBall account can pay for first-come balls. Reserving an orange ball needs the paid Solo membership, which can add crew and guests at a discount and includes medical evacuation cover. A limited number of boaters each week can upgrade to reserve 24 hours ahead instead of on the morning.
Check-in and check-out on reservable BoatyBall moorings are both at noon. A ball you reserve at 7 AM is yours from 12 PM that day until 12 PM the next.
Don't. BoatyBall's rules say captains who tie up to a ball reserved by someone else have their account and boat suspended permanently and are reported to their charter company. If you did reserve, check the number on the ball matches your booking.
Red (or yellow-striped) balls belong to the BVI National Parks Trust. They are day-use only, 90 minutes, at dive and snorkel sites such as The Indians, the Caves at Norman Island, the RMS Rhone, The Baths, The Dogs and Sandy Cay. They are covered by the marine-park permit your charter base sells, and you cannot stay overnight on one.
Most overnight stops in the BVI are on a mooring ball rather than at anchor: the National Parks Trust protects the reefs and seagrass, and the popular bays are too deep or too crowded to anchor well. Three kinds of ball share the water. BoatyBall's orange reservable balls and white first-come balls are paid through the BoatyBall app at Jost Van Dyke, Tortola, Marina Cay, Cooper Island, Virgin Gorda's North Sound and Anegada. Resort, bar and Moor Seacure balls at the Bight, Peter Island, Bitter End, Trellis Bay and elsewhere are paid to whoever comes by in a dinghy. The Trust's red day balls at the dive sites are 90 minutes and covered by the marine-park permit.
